We got transferred back as fast as we left. Talking about heading to Lethbridge this week turned into, pack your things and get back here, to are you here yet, the ambulance plane is on its way... Shonda and Jasper flew, I drove our car. I got in late Monday night.
Now we're trying to get comfortable with a new NICU and their plans. It doesn't take much experience in a hospital (between Shonda and Jasper we've got plenty now) to realize that everyone has vastly different opinions about things. So now we're trying to sort through all of that and get settled on a plan for Jasper and I think we're there, but it involves Shonda staying at the hospital and coming home occasionally. It sounds like he will probably be in the NICU here for somewhere between 1 and 3 weeks depending on how he progresses in terms of gaining weight, not having bradycardia episodes, getting the bum sore fixed before it turns into an ulcer (real concern), etc. The good news is that we're thrilled to be worrying about the "little stuff" that comes from being a premie. Unfortunately, we're feeling quite worn down by the rollercoaster from the past 3 months and returning to the realities of home/work makes this sink in a little more.
Right now we're just trying to survive, because one of the major criteria Jasper needs to reach is independent feeding. Feeding a baby at home is hard work, feeding one in the hospital is even harder. The idea is for us to start taking over his care so we're doing baths 3x/week, diaper changes as much as possible, etc. Shonda continues to make progress on weaning off BP medication despite the lack of sleep, etc, so we're now optimistic that she doesn't have an underlying blood pressure problem.
Finally, thanks to everyone for your help and support, this has made a difficult situation that much more bearable.
Ok, time to go eat lunch and do a little unpacking!
